This book is about a girl, who lives on the moon, named Phaet. She doesn’t talk much since her father died in an accident when she was six years-old. So, she quietly works in her area’s greenhouse trying to help her mother care for her household and lets her best friend, Umbriel, do the talking for her. Suddenly, her mother is taken away for having a contagious disease. As a result of this, Phaet enlists in the military to save her family from going to one of the moon’s “Shelters” and possibly freeing her mother.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable book! It’s very similar to “Divergent” by Veronica Roth but set on the moon. In the beginning, it was a little slow but as the reader continues you can see the overarching plot line that the author intended. What I thought was new and interesting was that there was no romantic subplot, which makes this book stand out from the sea of young adult science-fiction
The most memorable thing about this novel is the character Phaet; because, unlike other YA novels, Phaet isn’t a complete superhero from the start. She is a normal, real-life girl being put into an intense, stressful situation which makes her very relatable.
