Preus’s novel is about a teenage girl named Francie. Francie gives up her dream to have a career on the stage after receiving a call from her great aunts. Francie travels to her aunts’ neighborhood on a lakeside to see that the neighbors dying fast as a result of peculiar accidents. Francie tries to get to the bottom of all the madness and starts to think the source of the issues may help her find out more about her past.
I thought the book was interesting and mysterious, but I didn’t have a great desire to find out the cause of all the deaths. Despite the lack of suspense I felt, I found Francie to be a very dynamic character, and it was amusing to see her shift in beliefs throughout different parts of the novel. In addition, I thought Francie’s quest to discover what really happened to her parents to be captivating. Also, I think it was over obvious that there was an underlying cause to the suspicious deaths in the neighborhood, and the idea of it being a coincidence should not have been mentioned.
I think the part where Francie tries to find out more about what happened to her family to be the most intriguing part of the book.
