Congratulations to Lindsey P., grade 11, at Glen Allen Library! Lindsey’s short story was randomly selected as this week’s Summer Stories Teen Writing Contest winner. Lindsey will receive a copy of Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith.
Week 1 Prompt:
In the midst of a natural disaster, students are trapped inside their school for several days. What happens?
Lindsey’s Winning Story:
“Excuse me,” no one even glanced in the direction of the mousy schoolteacher. She cleared her throat and hopped up on one of the lunch tables. After smoothing down her hair and adjusting her top she tried again, “Excuse me!”
The students all turned to look at Mrs.Dower, who after days of not getting the proper amount of sleep or a decent shower looked a little on the crazy side.
“Now I have some news that may be upsetting to some of you-”
“Did someone die!? I knew someone would die,” a freshman boy interjected.
“No one died,” Mrs.Dower continued her announcement, “As you all know we’ve been stuck here for a while now. We have plenty of food don’t worry about that; however, we are running low on…cupcakes.”
The room was absolutely silent until the same freshman boy spoke again, “ Mrs.Dower, please say it isn’t so! Those cupcakes are the only thing keeping me motivated to live.”
“Quit being dramatic, Timothy. I know how to solve this problem; we’ll have a race! There are exactly twenty cupcakes left, the first twenty people who finish running around the entire first floor three times gets a cupcake. Line up!”
Mrs.Dower watched the kids line up and take off in a mad frenzy when she yelled go. Once the last student was out of sight Mrs.Dower calmly walked into the teacher’s lounge, peeled the wrapper off the last cupcake, and ate it in absolute silence.
Don’t miss your chance to win! Submit your original story in response to this week’s prompt.
