Read + Review — I Funny TV: A Middle School Story by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein

Jamie Grimm is officially the planet’s funniest kid, but that doesn’t mean that trouble stays out of his path. From a new, invincible school bully to the constant inner voice that says he is not funny enough, his life is being overrun by burdens that he has little control over. After using the one million dollars from winning the national comedy competition, only then does he realize that money was an advance to star in a new sitcom, “Jamie Funnie”. Although it seems to be a tempting proposition, it means that he may not have enough time for his true friends and true life. Wave after wave of problems keep arising as he accepts to save any chance of his future as a comedian. As known from the philosophical proverb, “Complex problems have simple solutions,” yet Jamie is unable to find any. Is there a way out of all the troubles he has weaved his way into? Ultimately, can he find a way to regain all he has lost and prevent all he is about to lose?

I felt that this novel was an interesting read which was, as obvious from the title, filled with humor and jokes that make one laugh out loud. The pages are well written and filled with pictures that make it a more enjoyable story. Even though this is the fourth book in the series, it is surprisingly easy to delve into the book. The events and situations throughout correspond to those in real life. Yet, I felt that the entire story revolved around one main event; including some stories of Jamie’s personal life could have balanced it. Also, the book is somewhat like its prequels. Even then, the problems surrounding this teenage comedian are fun to read. Overall, this was an enjoyable novel and I would recommend it to a friend.

A particularly humorous part is when Lars Johannsen turns up – he is the new school bully, a behemoth able to tower just about everyone. He represents the harsher aspects of human nature, as well as ties to the problems that some teenagers face. The areas that include him are exceptionally memorable.
