Lady Midnight is the first book of the third official Shadowhunters series. It focuses on parabatai Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn, and is set a few years after the rise of Sebastian Morgenstern. During that period, Emma’s parents were killed. When people and fey are found dead on the streets of Los Angeles with similar writings as were on the Carstairs, Emma and Julian try to track down the killer with Mark Blackthorn, recently returned from the jurisdiction of the fair folk. This book also introduces Johnny and Kit Rook, two Sighted mundanes who act as informants in the Downworld.
I loved it; however, I think that it is easier to understand if one has read the prior Shadowhunter books, especially the Mortal Instruments. Although the author explained backstory where necessary, there are references and cameos that are easier to appreciate with more information. Also, this series includes Mexican Shadowhunters, which I feel provides both cultural variety and a broader view of this world; not only does it include the US and UK, but also Mexico and other similarly not-Caucasian, English speaking nation. Personally, I like that, considering how many books are in predominately Caucasian, English speaking communities.
I found Mark and the fairies most memorable. In previous books set in this world, there has been exploration of werewolves, warlocks, vampires, and robots, but this is the first time that I have felt involved with the fairies and their culture.
