Read + Review: Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld

81qrwvx389lThis novel incorporates two stories in one book, with alternating chapters from each world. Darcy Patel is an eighteen-year-old girl who has just finished high school and has been contracted to publish her new novel, Afterworlds. Darcy, against her parents’ wishes, moves to New York to publish her Young Adult novel. In Darcy’s book, Lizzie slips into the “Afterworld” after a terrorist attack in an airport. Now able to see the spirits of those who have died, Lizzie discovers a series of murders that went unsolved many years before, and makes it her mission to bring the killer to justice.

The intertwining of two different yet connected stories in one novel was a fresh and brilliant idea. It was hard to put this book down, and I always wanted to know what happened next in each equally exciting world. Darcy’s story encompasses real life conflicts and fears and the terror of going off on your own after high school, and Lizzie’s story is packed full of action, mystery, and everlasting themes. This novel was still an interesting read, with well developed characters and an adventurous plot.

One thing that was amazing to learn about was how YA publishing works. Darcy has to go through what many people don’t realize is a part of writing a novel- rewriting, touring, editing, cover designs, and help from many, many other people.
