Summer Stories — Week 4 Winner

Congratulations to Rebekah C., grade 6, at Gayton Branch Library! Rebekah’s short story was randomly selected as this week’s Summer Stories Teen Writing Contest winner. Rebekah will receive a copy of Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith.

Week 4 Prompt: Your main character and their friends are walking through a neighborhood when they see an abandoned house. After getting up the nerve to check it out, they open the door…

Rebekah’s Winning Story:
“Come on Kensie!” my friends yell. “It’s abandoned, we aren’t going to get caught!” I roll my eyes, and say, “Haven’t you guys heard of haunted houses? Ghosts? Kids who go into abandoned houses never coming out again?” My argument apparently doesn’t concern my friends, because Joy grabs my arm, and drags me in. The floorboards creak under my feet. Spiderwebs glimmer in the light sneaking through the cracks in the wall.

Suddenly Joy screams. She plunges down through the floor. I hear a splat, then it’s still. One kid down, three more to go. Unconcerned, Robbie and Brittany continue on. I yell to their receding backs, “Let’s leave NOW, before something else happens!” Before they can turn, something else happens. Both suddenly crumple to the floor, moaning, “It’s the tail, the tail!” What tail? I wonder. Too late I find out. A bright pink scorpion stings me in the leg. The last thing I think is, I was the one who told them not to go in.

Don’t miss your chance to win! Submit your original story in response to this week’s prompt.
