Week 7 — Summer Stories Winner

Congratulations to Anna S., grade 10, at Tuckahoe Area Library! Anna’s short story was randomly selected as this week’s Summer Stories Teen Writing Contest winner. Anna will receive a copy of Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith.

Week 7 Prompt:  Your main character is granted the power to give another person a superpower. Who do they pick? How to they choose them? Why?

Anna’s Winning Story:
When I heard Minnie had been diagnosed with stage four cancer it struck me hard. All my life had always been there for me. I knew it was time for me to step up and be her hero. I felt lame and useless visiting her, it shocked me to see her lying there all pale and weak. Her previously rich sweet voice had dropped down to a raspy whisper, and her curly black hair was all gone.
That night as I lay awake in bed, a memory jarred me and I realized what I could do. The memories swirled around me as I picked up the silver key and lock. I remembered how Minnie had slapped me hard for saying I was worthless, I remembered her hands slipping the silver lock and key into mine, how it would bring one wish to reality if I unlocked it.
So the next time I sat down by her hospital bed, I asked her a question.
“Minnie, what’s the thing you want most?”
“I always wanted to fly around the world with you.” She said with a little smile.
“With me?” I said in shock “Why?”
“I want everyone to know with no doubt that you are my friend.” she whispered.
“Well Minnie…” I whispered, turning the key in the lock. “I wish that we could fly around the world together.”
And as I pulled her out of bed, I could see a glimpse of Minnie just the way she had always been.

Don’t miss your LAST chance to win! Submit your original story in response to this week’s final prompt.
