Broken Crowns is the third and final book in the epic Internment Chronicles series. The book opens up by talking about Professor Leander, the man who got everyone to the ground. It furthermore describes what has just occurred in books 1 and 2. The kingdoms of Dastor and Havalais are still at war, Princess Celeste is nowhere to be found, and the king is now mining the soil of Internment for the phosane that Pen, the highly intelligent best friend of Morgan, speaks of. However, Pen soon discovers that Internment is sinking due to the mining and traveling in and out of the land. Then, King Ingram proposes a new proposition that would help make peace between the cities. Two lovers, Basil and Morgan, will travel to Internment in order to represent King Ingram on his behalf. Although, Morgan and Basil have an idea up their sleeves, one that may save Internment from sinking, once and for all.
My thoughts about this book are extremely conflicting. The beginning was a bit confusing, but perhaps this was because I did not read the previous novels in the trilogy. Nevertheless, I think that some of the diction wasn’t well thought out and should have been a bit more understandable. The plot line was somewhat disorganized, so I constantly found myself jumping from one event to the next in a matter of a few pages. To top it all off, everything we learned was from Morgan’s point of view. I would have definitely enjoyed the book more if I was able to travel into the minds of other characters, such as Pen and Princess Celeste. On the other hand, the main idea of this story was pretty clever and something that I have never laid eyes on.
I loved how each character’s personality was unique, yet they all meshed together very nicely. For example, Pen is practical, bold, and not afraid to speak her mind. However, she is best friends with Morgan, who is a lot more conservative and righteous. Like people say, opposites really do attract!
