The book is centered on Magnus Chase, a Bostonian teenager. He is an einherjar, an undead warrior of the Asgardian hall of the dead, Valhalla, and son of the god Frey. He and his friends Alex, Samirah, his magical talking sword Jack, Blitz, Hearth, T.J, Mallory, Halfborn are on a quest to find the god of evil, Loki, and stop him from starting Ragnarok, the great final battle that will destroy the world as we know it. They sail all around the Nine Worlds in their ship, the Big Banana, meeting several foes and usually proceeding to kill said foes. The book is the final one in a trilogy by #1 New York Times bestselling author Rick Riordan.
I thought it was fantastic and very well written. The book has a winning combination of humor, suspense, surprise, and adventure.The way that it brought ancient customs and concepts into the modern world is amazing. I liked how the book showed how the Magnus and the other warriors of Floor 19 overcame each challenge, and how each conflict focused on one of the characters. Riordan’s books are known for their witty humor, and this new addition is no exception. Every page has plenty of jokes that kept me on edge while reading the book.
The most memorable thing about the book was how each of the characters had to face a deeply personal challenge, like when Hearthstone had to go back to his abusive father, or when Mallory found her mother. I also liked the how the book wrapped up the series with great, though a bit empty, ending.
